The thing that I dislike about the winter the most is not the snow, the cold, or the weather. The thing I despise the most is the battle of the car seat. Oh you know moms, that daily dreaded struggle of shoving your child into the car seat who has now doubled in size due to a big puffy coat. Lets not forget the joy of stuffing your child into a coat for the 3 seconds it takes to get to the car and then taking it off again and then on again when you get to your destination. I’ve never run a marathon but I think that the energy exerted in either of these tasks is almost the same.
While sharing car seat battle stories with my cousin, she had mentioned that there are car seat ponchos. Curious, I decided to check it out. I wasn’t sure how worth it would be so I decided to hold back on the purchase. Low and behold my mom ended up buying it for Savanna for Christmas! That’s Grandmas for ya. The one we have was purchased from Otto & Odette on Etsy. The idea behind the poncho is that your child can wear something warm and be safely buckled into a car seat at the same time.
The poncho is handmade to order an super comfy. It is heavy, thick and made of fleece. They come in various beautiful prints and colors. There are two buttons underneath the arms that can be snapped to make it easier for play. The hood has a button under the chin to keep necks warm as well when outside.
So does it do the job? It is definitely easy to pop on and off for runs to the car. It is a little tricky to buckle your child in the seat blind as you have to have the poncho over top of the buckle. The back of the poncho is supposed to drape over the top of the car seat. At first, I couldn’t get it to drape over the top of the car seat. After a few times I was able to adjust it just right so that it stayed and she was comfortable. I will say, it is easier than taking that big coat on and off and on and off again. On a super cold day, it probably would be better to go with a coat but I see this being really useful in the fall and spring for outside play. Savanna loves wearing it and it gets tons of compliments.
These fuzzy wearable blankies cost anywhere form $35-$60 from the shop ours was purchased from. Overall, I’d say this is something nice to have on hand to give you a break from the daily car seat battle and nice for play in spring or fall weather. However, it’s probably not usable every day and will depend on how your little one takes to it and if it fits with your car seat. Check out the site below to decide if you will give it a shot!
